Organization Timeline

Over the years, NDWA has achieved significant milestones in advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls with disabilities across Nepal. This timeline highlights key moments in our organization’s journey, from our founding to our continued impact today.

  1. NDWA was officially established

    1988

    NDWA was officially established

    NDWA was legally registered in the district administration office of Kathmandu on 22 January 1998 as the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

    2000

    Support form DPOD Denmark

    DPOD Denmark supported some pieces of training for leadership development. The organization initiated to establish a rehabilitation centre for women with disabilities.

  3. This is a picture of NDWA Rehabilitation center in Budanilkantha. The building is two-storied and freshly plastererd. The windows and doors haven't been installed and the painting is also not done in the building.

    2005

    Establishment of the rehabilitation center.

    With the support from Ministry of Women Children and Social Welfare and the rehabilitation centre was operated in a rented house.

  4. 2006

    Formation of first self-help groups

    The organization started the formation of self-help groups of women with disabilities at the local level.

  5. Establishment of first physical office

    2007

    Establishment of first physical office

    NDWA established its physical office which was supported by Action-Aid Nepal. SHIA Neuro added support for the operation of the rehabilitation centre.

  6. 2008

    First research on issues of women with disabilities

    NDWA implemented the first research on the issues of women with disabilities and started a livelihood program with seed money distribution to the women with disabilities in need. NFDN also provided proposal writing training for some potential women.

    2010

    Expansion from Kanchanpur in the west to Biratnagar in the east.

    NDWA expanded its program and network in seven districts and established its regional offices in Biratnagar for the eastern region and Kanchanpur for the Far-west region.

  8. 2012

    First strategy paper.

    NDWA first time formulated its five years' strategy papers.

  9. Nepal Government issued the Act on Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

    2017

    Nepal Government issued the Act on Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

    NDWA, exclusively and jointly with NFDN and other national OPD, contributed to the advocacy to bring a separate disability Act and incorporate the issues of women with disabilities after the ratification of CRPD. In 2017 the government issued the Act on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

    2019

    Second research on gender-based violence against women with disabilities.

    NDWA conducted second research on gender-based violence against women with disabilities. The concept of the rehabilitation center was also expanded in province 1 and procured a piece of land to make the center. NDWA entered into a partnership with UN agencies and put steps for promoting the political rights of women with disabilities.

    2021

    NDWA signed another multi-year project in the support of CBM

    NDWA signed another multi-year project in the support of CBM which is related to empowering women with disabilities against gender-based violence. The regular rehabilitation service was shifted to the own building of NDWA
