Mukti Nepal in coordination with Nepal Disabled Women Association (NDWA) conducted a training program to enhance the knowledge, awareness, and capacity of women and girls with disabilities on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
The training covered key topics, including bodily autonomy, privacy, dignity, informed consent, menstrual health and hygiene, healthy relationships, family planning, safe motherhood, and STI/HIV prevention. Discussions also addressed gender-based violence, sexual abuse, forced marriage, and forced sterilization, along with available protection and support services.
Through interactive discussions, role-plays, and practical demonstrations, participants strengthened their understanding of bodily rights, personal boundaries, consent, the right to say no, and informed decision-making regarding their reproductive health.
The training also explored physical, communication, and institutional barriers faced by women and girls with disabilities when accessing healthcare services. Participants gained practical knowledge of requesting accessible information, sign language interpretation, privacy, and necessary support when accessing health facilities. Information on local helplines and One-Stop Crisis Management Centres (OCMCs) was also shared.
Key achievements of the training included improved knowledge and awareness of SRHR, increased confidence in making decisions about their bodies and personal boundaries, enhanced ability to recognize violence and understand consent, and strengthened practical skills to access available healthcare and support services.
Throughout the training, trainer prioritized meaningful participation by ensuring accessible learning materials, appropriate accommodations, confidentiality, and a safe and respectful learning environment. Through this initiative, the project aims to empower women and girls with disabilities to exercise their SRHR, speak out against violence, and access safe, inclusive, and quality reproductive health services.
